There are half a million “revenge porn posts” on Facebook and Instagram worldwide.

Revenge porn entries: Angry ex-boyfriends usually upload pictures of their (ex) partner with pornographic content in order to harass them in public. A gross invasion of privacy and punishable by law.

A 25-person Facebook team exclusively deals with reported posts of this type. The images should be deleted as quickly as possible. Artificial intelligence should support and recognize such content before it is uploaded. This is intended to prevent revenge porn from going online and circulating in the first place.

Revenge porn: Distributed on Facebook, porn sites, and Google search results

Once images are posted, they can quickly spread across the Internet. The content first ends up on Facebook, but also on pornographic sites and is ultimately displayed in Google searches.

The Facebook team confirmed in an interview with NBC News that it is immensely difficult to prevent such postings. In order to optimize the procedure, the team exchanged ideas with revenge porn victims from the USA, England and other countries. Many of the victims said the reporting process for such images was confusing and insensitive.

Danger often underestimated

Revenge porn is not an unknown phenomenon in Switzerland either. Dino Dal Farra, media spokesman for the Bern Cantonal Police explains:

“If we receive such reports, we will investigate accordingly. In our experience, images, videos and texts with intimate content are often produced by young people themselves. They then end up in the net. Due to the dynamics of the digital world, there is a very high risk of losing control over this content.”

The police inform young people about this and advise them to think about possible consequences early on. Parents are also asked to talk to their children about this topic and to inform them about the consequences.

Charges possible

If you distribute revenge pornography, you have to expect charges and criminal proceedings. It is up to the judiciary to determine which criminal offense is committed. The respective criminal offenses can range from slander, slander or insults, violation of secret or private areas through recording devices and unauthorized acquisition of personal data, to coercion or pornography.
