Facebook is currently facing massive allegations: Apparently the camera on current iOS devices is activated by the app.

And not when you want to take a photo, but when you scroll through the Facebook timeline as normal. Many iOS users noticed that you can see the activated camera in a thin border on the left side as soon as you open a photo on Facebook and then scroll down.

Last weekend, a user on Twitter made a video pointing out that the camera was activating in the background:

But on November 2nd, a user reported the camera being activated in the background and called it “a little worrying”. Many other users have traced the alleged bug on their iOS devices and also recorded videos of it:

Other iOS users reported that the app would not open the camera for them. What exactly caused this was initially unclear. Users of older iOS versions could not understand this, so it was initially assumed that it was a bug in the current iOS version 3.2.2.
On the other hand, the left edge remained black when the camera was deactivated for Facebook, so it clearly has to do with the access rights of the Facebook app.

Facebook: “It’s a bug”

On November 12th, Facebook's vice president of integrity, Guy Rosen, became aware of the issue and tweeted that it appeared to be a bug but that they were looking into it.

As a Facebook spokesperson TechCrunch shortly after their article was published, it was actually a bug in the current Facebook app:

“We recently discovered that version 244 of the Facebook iOS application would incorrectly launch in landscape mode.
While fixing this issue last week in v246 - launched November 8 - we accidentally introduced a bug that caused the app to partially navigate to the camera screen next to the News Feed when users tapped photos.
We have not seen any evidence of photos or videos being uploaded due to this error. We are sending the fix for this to Apple today.”

Guy Rosen added to “ The Hacker News

“Triggering this bug enabled the camera preview, and once triggered, the preview remained active until you tapped elsewhere in the app. At no time was the preview content saved by the app or uploaded to our servers.”

However, if this bug only appeared in version v246 from November 8th, it is questionable why a user noticed on November 2nd that the camera was activated in the background under certain circumstances.
