A network from Israel publishes fake news on right-wing sites and profits through advertising.
An Israel-based network of fraudsters is using Islamophobic Facebook pages in the US to make money from their followers by sending inflammatory fake news. a report in the Guardian , the social media giant still has no means to effectively combat fraud, hate propaganda and misinformation campaigns.
“Inaction from Facebook”
Ilhan Omar, a Muslim US politician and member of the United States House of Representatives, was one of the main targets of the smear campaigns.
“Facebook’s inaction is a threat to our democracy. The company does not take seriously the fact that it is a platform for white nationalist hate. And there is a clear reason for this: Facebook benefits from it,”
the report quotes the Democrat.
The scam group, which emerged about two years ago and whose trail leads to Tel Aviv, contacted several popular right-wing Facebook pages. Members identified themselves as someone who shared their views and was interested in producing content for them.

As soon as they had access to the sites, they published sensational reports about Muslims and especially Ilhan Omar because these guaranteed a particularly large number of clicks.
Over 1,000 articles per week
According to the report, the network generated more than 1,000 fake news articles per week, leading to sites outside of Facebook and overflowing with advertising. The fraudsters benefited from the advertising revenue generated by the many views. In October 2019 alone, the network published almost 5,700 posts that were shared, liked or commented on around 850,000 times.
According to Facebook, several “financially motivated” pages have now been deleted. This content would violate the guidelines and would be removed from the platform. Critics see Facebook as being too inactive when it comes to hate campaigns that not only bring profit to fraudsters, but also increase hatred and radicalization among users.
