The app is currently being tested by US high school students.

The meme app LOL (short for “laugh out loud”) is intended to attract young users in particular, after many of them are turning their backs on the social media platform.

It offers funny GIFs and short videos (similar to 9GAG ) that the user can find in various categories, such as cute animal videos, pranks or misadventures.

Facebook is not relying on something new, but rather trying to get young people on board with tried and tested methods. We already know this approach from Facebook.

Snapchat, Lasso and Co.

In October 2018, the company attempted Lasso back to teenagers in the United States.

Just like TikTok , Lasso relied on short music videos that can be edited after recording and add effects and lyrics. The big advantage of Facebook in contrast to the competition: the deal with many large music companies and the possibility of uploading recorded videos directly to the story on Facebook if desired.

Another example of capturing the zeitgeist of young people is Snapchat , whose popular functions can now all be found Instagram

Will LOL bring the success that Facebook wants?

According to The Verge, the company has been trying to bring young users back to Facebook for more than five years now.

It remains to be seen whether LOL will finally achieve the desired success. We are excited to see how the testing phase of the app goes and how high school students rate it.

Sometimes neither Lasso nor LOL are available in Germany.
