Augmented Reality (in German: extended reality) has been found in Facebook Messenger for around a year. Now this function is being expanded to include games.

Facebook announced on Wednesday that this new function is now available. All you need is the latest version of the messenger app and of course friends you want to play with.

What is AR supposed to be?

For everyone who doesn't know this function yet: With so-called augmented reality, real recordings are mixed with computer images. For example, during a video chat you can put on a virtual dog's muzzle and ears that follow your head movements.

And how can I play with it?

As mentioned above, you need the latest version of your messenger. The best way to do this is to check your phone's store for updates for your apps (if this doesn't happen automatically anyway).

Then you choose a person or even a group chat as a game partner and start a video chat with the camera in the top bar. All you have to do is tap on the star and choose one of the two currently available games.

What can I play?

To start with, there are only two games to choose from. In "Don't smile" you compete against each other in a non-smile battle, in "Asteroids Attack" you see who can fly better with their spaceship through an asteroid field.

Is there nothing more?

Facebook has already announced more games for the next few weeks and months, including a game called “Beach Bump,” in which a ball is thrown back and forth, and “Kitten Kraze,” a game for cat lovers.
