After Facebook unsuccessfully launched the Snapchat service, the company is now buying the start-up FacioMetrics, whose technology analyzes faces and promises new funny and creative effects for photos and videos.
As reported on the Der Standard and RP Online websites, Facebook has now bought a facial recognition start-up.
The social media giant has been trying to buy the free instant messaging service Snapchat for years and is adopting popular functions for its own platform or its subsidiary Instagram.
With the newly acquired technology FacioMetrics, Facebook wants to come up with new effects for photos and videos.
“The way people communicate with each other is changing. Masks and other effects allow people to express themselves in a more fun and creative way.”
explained Facebook according to Der Standard.
FacioMetrics was founded in 2015 by Fernando De la Torre and is able to analyze faces using artificial intelligence. According to De la Torre, this is useful for smartphone applications that rely on animation or virtual reality, for example.
How much Facebook paid for FacioMetrics is unknown, but what is certain is that Facebook wants to lure Snapchat out of the reserve, whose service allows you to view photos that are only visible for a certain number of seconds and then “destruct” themselves to send friends.
