Incomplete database was to blame for the name being translated incorrectly

Incorrect translation – The most important thing to start with:

  1. Chinese President's name translated on Facebook as “Mr Shithole”.
  2. Facebook apologizes to Xi Jinping
  3. The reason was a technical error in Facebook's translation database

Embarrassing faux pas for Facebook. On Facebook pages in Myanmar (formerly Burma), Chinese President Xi Jinping's name was translated from Burmese into English as "shithole" during his state visit.

Facebook has apologized for the embarrassing mistake. It is a technical error.

“This should not have happened and we are taking steps to ensure it does not happen again.”

“Mr. Shithole, President of China, arrives at 4 p.m.”

Inappropriate entries on official Facebook page. The translation error resulted in inappropriate entries on the official Facebook page of Myanmar's de facto head of government Aung San Suu Kyi.

These were, for example: “Mr. Shithole, President of China, arrives at 4 p.m.” or

“The President of China, Mr. Shithole, has signed the guest book of the House of Representatives.”

Statement from Facebook

Xi's name was not included in the database that Facebook uses to translate from Burmese. In such a case, the translation software replaces with those that contained similar syllables. A test showed that other Burmese words with the prefixes “xi” or “shi” were also translated as “shithole.”
