Facebook collects information about users' whereabouts even when location tracking is turned off

Facebook admitted this in a letter to US senators dated December 12th. This letter was published in excerpts on Twitter.

Facebook could, for example, infer the location if users are tagged in a photo of a certain place. The IP address of mobile devices also provides the company with information about this. Although these can be somewhat imprecise, they can at least provide information about the city in which the user is currently located.

US Congress must act

Two US senators have now requested the information that has become known from Facebook.

“There is no switching off. No control over personal data,” Republican Senator Josh Hawley wrote on Twitter.

By determining your location, Facebook is able to display advertisements from nearby businesses. In addition, the company also has better options to take action against misinformation and hackers. In this way, it could protect its users' accounts by alerting them to suspicious movements.
