Dispute over encryption in Facebook apps
In the spring, Mark Zuckerberg announced a major expansion of encryption on Facebook's platforms. This was followed in October by a request from politicians from the USA, Great Britain and Australia that Facebook should not expand its encryption without installing a backdoor for law enforcement authorities.

In a joint letter to Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg, they emphasized the importance of protecting children from violence and sexual abuse. Action against terrorism would also be made more difficult because end-to-end encryption would mean no one would have access to the content. Not even Facebook itself.
Privacy is a top priority on Facebook
Facebook managers Will Cathcart and Stan Chudnovsky are responsible for WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. They have now publicly responded to the letter , citing end-to-end encryption with which they want to offer their users the best technology available to protect their privacy.

Backdoor vulnerability
Cathcart and Chudnovsky further explain that backdoors – whoever they are set up for – always represent vulnerabilities.
“It is simply impossible to create such a backdoor for one purpose,” say Cathcart and Chudnovsky, “and not expect that others will also try to open it.”
Such a weakening within an encrypted system means that it is for everyone and weakened everywhere: “People’s private messages would be less secure, and the real winners would be anyone who tries to take advantage of that weakened security.”

These arguments cannot be ignored. Several hundred organizations, including Amnesty International, have warned against complying with politicians' demands.
Facebook remains willing to support and offer assistance to prosecutors “as long as it does not undermine the safety of our users.” Monthly meetings with government officials will continue to be held to conduct discussions.
