Current news from trustworthy sources will now be marked “breaking news” on Facebook.

As reported in the Facebook Newsroom , both users and many media companies want more support in flagging breaking news and better access to breaking news from sources they trust.

As part of the Facebook Journalism Project, Facebook has been conducting tests over the past few months that have allowed over 100 news organizations worldwide to mark stories on Facebook as “breaking news.”

The tests showed that users are interacting more actively with these messages, so everyone in Germany, Australia, France, Mexico, Spain and the United Kingdom can now see this label.

In these countries, the company is considering using markers in the news feed ranking as a signal that the news is up-to-date.

Users can also provide feedback to Facebook if they do not consider a message to be “breaking news.”

Facebook's partners in Germany saw an increase in various parameters related to breaking news between June and September.

This includes outgoing clicks (+7.1%), reading time (+6.4%), interactions (+3.8%) and sharing of these messages (+17.6%).

Specifically, media have the following options:

  • Instant articles, mobile and web links, and Facebook Live videos can be marked as “breaking news.”
  • The marking can be used once a day and you can also determine how long a post should remain marked as “breaking news” (up to 6 hours).
  • Additionally, five labels are available per month.
  • Further information about these posts can be viewed in the Facebook page statistics.

Tests in other countries in Europe and Asia are also planned.
