“Ten cents per profile access” – Hackers steal data from Facebook and publish private messages
According to Deutschlandfunk and Tagesschau , the British BBC reported on a hacker attack on Facebook.
Around 12,000 affected users live in Russia, and a good 47,000 users live in Ukraine. In addition, users from the UK, the USA and Brazil are also affected.
A total of 257,000 Facebook users are said to have fallen victim to data theft. According to t3n, the IT security company Digital Shadow, which was commissioned by the BBC to check this information, did not yet want to confirm this number.
Apparently private messages were intercepted and published on the Internet and made freely accessible since September of this year. This also includes information such as email addresses and telephone numbers.
An investigative team from the BBC Russian Service said that Russian hackers could be responsible.
Facebook itself announced that the website's security system had not been cracked. The hackers probably obtained the data via incorrect browser settings or via program extensions for Internet browsers. The social media giant has taken steps to protect other users' accounts from attacks.
IP address in St. Petersburg
The data had been posted in online forums. According to the hackers, they had access to 120 million Facebook accounts. They offered these accesses for sale for ten cents per Facebook profile.
According to BBC reporters, they had contact with five Facebook users based in Moscow, Belgrade and Perm who were affected by the data theft. They were able to identify her private Facebook messages in some of the texts offered online.
In addition, Russian links were apparently found on one of the sales platforms. The IP address of the website led to St. Petersburg.
