Facebook is developing a health care tool that reminds people to have examinations or can find doctors.
As Facebook announced in its News Room , the social media platform is developing a feature that will help users keep an eye on their health.
According to Facebook, science or medicine alone cannot find solutions to many of today's health threats. Changing communication trends and unequal access to care options would require new solutions and partnerships.
A new function has therefore been introduced in the USA, India, Brazil, Bangladesh and Pakistan. This is intended, for example, to make it easier to find a blood donor. The user can register as a donor themselves and, if necessary, will be notified by blood banks via Facebook.
“So far, more than 50 million people have registered to donate,”
said Facebook.

Another area is preventive health care. According to Facebook, preventive measures include the potential to detect diseases early, determine when diseases are best treated and, in some cases, prevent them from developing. However, factors such as a lack of awareness, access to care facilities and costs are said to create a barrier for many people to seek preventive examinations.
To help these people, Facebook is working with U.S. health organizations to connect users with the right resources and check-up reminders. The focus should first be on the two leading causes of death in the USA: heart disease and cancer as well as the flu.
The resources available in the tool are intended to be provided by the American Cancer Society, the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association, and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Share sensitive data with Facebook?
Facebook has also written a blog post in the News Room . Facebook is aware that data relating to health is particularly sensitive and emphasizes that additional measures are being taken for this purpose.
The aim is to only collect a limited amount of information. Namely, the information that is absolutely necessary to ensure the function of the tool, but also the information that helps to improve the function over time. This includes, among other things, information such as age, gender and place of residence in order to be able to display the location of so-called Federally Qualified Health Centers .

As always, Facebook users can share the tool via the newsfeed and in Messenger. According to Facebook, this means that no details from the tool are published, only that he uses the function.
Facebook also ensures that the data will not be shared with third parties. This is intended to prevent advertising from being generated based on the data. Exception: If the user clicks on suggested links or “likes” a page, this data is collected and used for advertising purposes.
