News portal NU.nl terminates partnership – ban on investigation of politicians
As pressetext reports, Facebook has lost its only fact-checking partner in the Netherlands, the digital news portal “ NU.nl ”, because politicians only have to adhere to the guidelines to a limited extent on the social media platform and are therefore allowed to spread lies ( pressetext reported ).
According to fact-checkers, this decision would make the fight against fake news and misinformation campaigns impossible.
No fact checks for politicians
“It is important that online platforms carry out fact checks, but this alone does not solve the question of the truth.
Everyone has a different perspective and many just want to see their world view confirmed, which is why they accuse companies of using fact checkers to decide for themselves what is true and what is not. It must be clear what the facts are based on,”
explains digital and political consultant Martin Fuchs in the press text interview.
NU.nl recently examined an advertisement by Dutch politician Esther de Lange claiming that ten percent of Romania's arable land is owned by non-Europeans.

The fact checker found this statement to be unfounded. According to NU.nl, Facebook intervened because politicians are exempt from fact checks.
Facebook doesn’t want to “be the referee”
“What is the point of fighting fake news if we are not allowed to examine politicians? Just to be clear: We stand behind the content of our fact checks,”
emphasizes Gert-Jaap Hoekman, editor-in-chief of NU.nl. Facebook, on the other hand, does not see its role as
“To be an arbiter in political debates and to prevent a politician’s statements from reaching his audience and being discussed publicly,”
said Nick Clegg, vice president of global affairs and communications at Facebook.
According to “ Gizmodo ,” critics accuse Facebook, particularly in the USA, of merely avoiding accusations of censorship from Donald Trump and his supporters with its relaxed guidelines towards politicians.
However, the company would thereby facilitate the spread of misinformation and even create an incentive for it.
