Now it turns out that the woman has fallen victim to a fraudster. The virtual relationship, which later turned out to be a case of so-called “romance scamming”, began a few months ago.

Friend request came via Facebook

At the end of December, the 63-year-old received a friend request via Facebook from an alleged “Lukas Schaefer”, who was supposedly a businessman from Edinburgh (Scotland). As messages continued to be exchanged, the accused used false love and promises of marriage to gain the woman's trust.

In fact, he was only after the woman's assets, so he stole a four-figure sum of money at the beginning of January. In the following weeks and months, the fraudster also faked emergency situations for her. Among other things, he stated that he was on a business trip in Cyprus and needed money.

His bank card suddenly stopped working or he had to pay a customs fine, which is why he needed money quickly. All pretextual circumstances to get their money. When he tricked her into transferring a five-figure amount of money to gain access to his foreign account with a balance of four million dollars, she became suspicious and filed a report. The fraud was exposed.

The police currently assume that the woman who swindled almost 20,000 euros from the fraudster with this scam has probably lost the money. The true identity of the fraudster is not yet known.

The police warn against such cases, which are repeatedly reported to the police.

Such fraudsters can often be recognized by the fact that after the first contact they bombard their victims with long letters full of bombastic vows of love and declarations of love. They usually decorate themselves with pictures of attractive people that they find and copy on the Internet. Under no circumstances should you accept demands for money from such acquaintances and, as a precaution, you should back up the email and chat text data exchanged.
