This old saying can also be applied to social media. After all, it seems to be a contradiction that sites full of hate, fraud and fake news are tolerated, while a harmless comment leads to being blocked. What exactly is going wrong here? What about moderation?
A platform paradox! Imagine a platform that connects billions of users and gives them a voice. This is Facebook. The great appeal of this platform is the ability to share opinions and ideas with friends, family and even strangers. But here's where it gets hairy: Where is the line between free expression and dangerous disinformation?
Some say the problem is the algorithms. This machine prioritization of content tends to promote polarizing and emotional content. It's not that Facebook actively supports hate and fraud, but the way it promotes content can bring such posts to the forefront.
The little comment that (didn't) make it
Then there are the innocent posts or comments that mysteriously violate the “guidelines.” Maybe you or someone you know has experienced this before. A harmless joke, random meme, or innocuous comment suddenly results in a 24-hour ban. The result of problematic moderation!
Why this happens is difficult to say. Maybe it's automated systems that misinterpret words or sentences. Or there are too many reports from users who denounce others for no reason.
Set a sign? Easier said than done! Everyone has seen this feature before: “Report this post”. But how many of us really felt heard? There are enough cases where obviously offensive or incorrect content is reported, only to receive a response that it “does not violate the Community Guidelines.” You feel like you're talking to a wall.
Why is moderation so difficult to get right?
A major problem is the sheer size and complexity of Facebook. It's not a small community website, but a global phenomenon. This means that there are literally billions of posts, images, videos and comments that need to be processed every day. Keeping track of them all is a herculean task.
Another problem is cultural differences. What is considered acceptable in one country may be considered rude or even hurtful in another. It is almost impossible to develop a single policy for everyone.
Conclusion
Facebook faces a huge task when it comes to moderation. It has to balance between freedom of expression and the protection of its users and always seems to be walking a fine line. While tolerance for questionable content is concerning, it's also important to remember that it's difficult to please everyone.
The real solution? It lies with us, the users. We need to be critical, stay well informed and ensure we are not contributing to the spread of misinformation. Only if we all do our part can we hope to get the most out of platforms like Facebook.
