Facebook's new terms of use have been in effect since April 20, 2018.
Our cooperation partner from Saferinternet.at looked at this step by step and paid attention to what exactly it was about and what you should pay attention to before giving your consent.
The background for the new terms of use is the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), which comes into force in Europe on May 25th. Anyone who processes personal data will have to adhere to stricter rules in the future and disclose which data is processed and how.
step by step
If you want to continue using Facebook and Instagram, you must agree to the terms of use . But what exactly is it about? By clicking on the link ( facebook.com/gdpr/consent ) you start a step-by-step guide. Here it is explained how the account data will be handled in the future and individual privacy settings can be selected by the user.
Step 1: Advertising
Facebook's main source of income is selling advertisements. The more information a user provides on Facebook, the more individually companies can display advertising. In addition, Facebook uses data from partners who have a connection with Facebook and collect additional information about users. The automatic sharing of data for advertising purposes can be deactivated by clicking on “Manage data settings”.
Tip: Update your advertising preferences settings to control what data advertisers can use.
Step 2: Face Detection
This function is used to automatically recognize your own face in photos and videos on the platform. This makes it easier to identify and tag people in images.
Activating facial recognition automatically requires the transfer of biometric data. Faces or fingerprints are information that is unique to each person and cannot be changed. Therefore, we do not recommend enabling this feature . Because once the data falls into the wrong hands, it cannot be reversed.
Tip: To keep this feature disabled, you need to click on “Manage data settings”.
Updated Terms of Service: Take it or leave it?
The terms of use are one thing above all: they are designed to be clearer and the language is simplified. If you want to continue using Facebook, you should definitely take a closer look at it. Use without consent is not possible.
- Age of use: Facebook can only be used from the age of 13. In the future, parents of children under 16 will have to agree if sensitive data (religious affiliation, political views, etc.) is shared or whether they can receive personalized advertising.
- Use of photos & videos: Facebook reserves the right to use content such as text, photos and videos for its purposes in the future. This license may be terminated by deleting your Content from the Account.
- Use of name, profile photo and actions: Facebook continues to grant itself the right to use this information, for example for advertisements. Your own “like” can be used by advertisers to motivate other users to also give a “like”.
- Data policy: The newly prepared data policy n makes it clear which data is processed by Facebook and for what purpose.
For example: In addition to all content that is shared directly via Facebook or Instagram, device information (e.g. hardware, signals such as Bluetooth or WLAN, stored cookies, etc.) is also processed. What is new is the indication that data access from other apps connected to Facebook will be further restricted in the future. For example: If an app is not used for three months, its developers can no longer access the users' Facebook data. Tip: Check which apps have access to your data and update your settings. If you don't use any apps or haven't logged in anywhere with Facebook's so-called “Social Login”, deactivate this function. - Objection to data processing: What is new is that there is now a form with which every user can submit additional objections to data processing, which cannot be limited by the tools provided.
- Contact the data protection officer: There is now also a contact form that can be used to write to Facebook's data protection officer directly.
