Memes have become an integral part of the internet.

Nowadays, a meme (pronounced: “Mim”) is an image, video or text that usually has humorous pop culture references, is often shared by users and appears again and again in variations, for example images from films and series with funny sayings (“Aliens !"), videos (one of the oldest and best-known videos is the " Star Wars Kid ") or certain sentences like "Harry, pull the car over" (which, by the way, Inspector Derrick never said to his assistant Harry).

“Get creative”

“Use your own images or choose one from our archive. Then get creative with texts, tools and effects.”

says Whale's app store description. The application is available for free and, according to Facebook, there are “no distractions, no hidden payments.”

Users can add various effects to their images on Whale and add text to them. They use this to create their own memes and then share them on Facebook Messenger and also on Instagram. Whale does not directly run under the name of Facebook, but was developed by the New Product Experimentation (NPE) team, according to “The Verge”. The app will only be tested in Canada for the global market.

Weapon against TikTok

Facebook founded the NPE earlier this year. His job is to develop new, experimental apps. Since its creation, the NPE has had two other apps called “Bump” and “Aux” available. Bump is a chat application that allows users to find new friends in their area. Aux is a DJ app that allows several users to create a playlist together and is primarily aimed at students. However, both apps have received relatively little attention.

With experiments like Whale, Facebook is trying to respond to the meteoric rise of TikTok. The Chinese video platform is a popular place for spreading memes worldwide, especially among young people. will make the platform more similar to platforms that are more popular with younger users, such as TikTok or its own subsidiary Instagram .
