Influencers on Facebook receive their own tools to gain more followers.

New updates now give well-known users the opportunity, among other things, to contribute together to a Facebook story. This means that influencers come to the fore at a big event and are discovered by new users.

Facebook tested this option at this year's “Tomorrowland” music festival in Belgium. “More than 20 artists, with a combined total of 73 million followers, contributed to a story about Tomorrowland. This meant their content was seen by a whole new audience,” explains Facebook. The company cites the musical duo “The Chainsmokers” as an example. A majority (92 percent) of the views on their story post came from users who had not previously followed them on Facebook.

Influencers recommended in feeds

Another innovation that should help influencers is an update to the Facebook news feed. In a test run, the social media platform should offer content from influencers on the feed, based on the users' previous preferences. “We are exploring different approaches to introduce people to both familiar faces and young talent,” the company said.

Facebook is also introducing a tool that allows influencers to invite their followers to contribute their own photo or video to one of their stories. Users can see this option via a button on the platform. This should not only make it possible for influencers to interact more closely with their fans, Facebook pages, such as those of brands, should also be able to use this tool.

Users pay for “Facebook Stars”

Another measure to make influencers better known are the “Facebook Stars”. This is a type of like that users can buy and send to an influencer during a live stream. In return, they often receive rewards from their idol, such as an individual message. For each “star” received, Facebook pays influencers one US cent.

Facebook is not the first social media platform to grant privileges to well-known users. For example, Snapchat gives influencers data about their followers, which should help them choose the right deals with brands. With the new tools, Facebook is trying to bind influencers and their fans more closely and thus gain more views for content.
