In contrast to websites, apps are very popular

Facebook's web traffic has halved in the past two years. Younger users often switch to rival YouTube. This is the conclusion reached by a survey by the market research company SimilarWeb .

The web traffic of the five internet giants Google, Facebook, YouTube, Yahoo and Amazon was analyzed. Facebook's monthly page views fell from 8.5 billion to 4.7 billion.

Google still at the top

According to experts, the popularity of the Facebook mobile app has increased over the same period. But this is not enough to close the gaping gap. According to the results of the study, Google still plays a pioneering role. Although Google's website has also suffered declines in the past two years, experts believe that this is simply a shift to mobile applications, voice search and various smart devices from the company.

"Our survey shows that YouTube's web traffic will overtake Facebook's, while Amazon will soon surpass Yahoo,"

says Stephen Kraus of SimilarWeb. If the trends continue as expected, such a development can be expected within the next two to three months.

“The five Internet giants have remained stable for several years, but now we are approaching a paradigm shift,”

summarizes Kraus.

Video content preferred

YouTube's web traffic growth shows that the younger generation is prioritizing video content over text-based content. The video portal not only serves as a source of entertainment but also as a source of information.

Overall, the use of apps – Facebook, Instagram and Messenger – has increased compared to websites. The Instagram app is currently used 56 minutes a day, whereas a year ago it was 27 minutes.
