Less stage for fake news and more control over shared messages – Facebook relies on alternative methods

As heise Online and SEO Südwest report, the social media company Facebook wants to present fake news “smaller” in the future and use “machine learning” to recognize it better.

While Facebook was still sure in 2016 that a red icon on fake news would reduce sharing of fake news, this measure had the opposite effect. According to the motto “What is forbidden is particularly attractive,” the labeling caused an increase in shares and likes.

Now the company is trying a completely new approach: In the fight against fake news, a combination of machine learning and user data is used to better detect fake news. This creates a list of candidates that is submitted to external fact checkers for review. According to its own statements, Facebook works with around 20 organizations worldwide that check the truth of news. This method allows these investigators to focus on a smaller proportion of potential false news in advance.

If fake news is detected, its perception on Facebook should be directly restricted by simply making it smaller and less prominent. In the future, images displayed with fake news should only be a tenth of the size of trustworthy news.

Other approaches are also planned, such as deleting accounts if you log in under a false identity or specifically looking for similarities between Facebook pages in order to put a stop to networks of fake news authors. Pages that spread false reports should also no longer be allowed to place ads and machine learning will no longer be limited to texts, but should also be able to analyze images.

Again at a glance:

  • Facebook will present fake news, including images, less prominently in the future
  • Machine learning is being further developed and should be able to evaluate not only texts, but also images
  • If you log in with a false identity, your account will be deleted
  • Facebook specifically looks for similarities between Facebook pages in order to identify fake news authors
  • Sites that spread fake news are no longer allowed to display or host ads
