With mixed reactions to the change, which at first glance might seem like a manufacturing defect, a new manufacturing trend in Europe has changed the way we deal with single-use drinks packaging. The bottle caps, now known as “tethered caps,” now remain firmly attached to the bottles and cannot be loosened even with effort. But what is the reason for this seemingly irritating change? It is the implementation of a new EU directive for the sustainable improvement of the environment.
The new norm: Tethered caps on bottles
The so-called tethered caps are not a passing trend. They are here to stay and are gradually becoming the standard in our local supermarkets. This applies not only to disposable PET bottles, but also to Tetrapaks.
Major beverage companies such as Coca-Cola have already addressed this change and switched their products in fall 2021. This change was highlighted with messages such as “Let me have it,” which led to increased online attention for the company. More beverage brands will follow, but why?
An EU directive for environmental protection
Separating caps and bottles is a thing of the past. By July 2024, all closures of disposable packaging up to three liters should be firmly connected to the containers. This is due to a new EU directive on single-use plastics.
The EU hopes that with this regulation the closures will end up in the trash along with the plastic bottles. The initiative also aims to reduce the careless throwing of waste in nature, known as littering.
The background to this initiative is the EU Commission's alarming observation that over 40 drink lids were found on just 100 meters of North Sea beach. Single-use plastic beverage bottles are a major contributor to ocean pollution. The EU directive therefore calls for more effective separate waste collection and plans further measures against environmental pollution by 2030.
The public reaction
Public opinion on tethered caps is divided. Some are upset about the inconvenience caused by the new closures, while others see the humorous side of the situation and applaud the well-intentioned environmental protection measures.
Conclusion: The implementation of tethered caps is a significant response to the urgent need to reduce environmental pollution from plastic waste. Keeping the caps on the bottles minimizes the risk of them being carelessly thrown away and ending up as additional litter in our oceans and on our beaches. Although this change requires adjustment from consumers, it goes a long way toward reducing the negative impact of our plastic consumption on the environment. This is a necessary step towards a more sustainable and environmentally conscious society.
