But what's the truth about this warning? The pharmacy magazine “Diabetes Guide” does the fact check.
Sugary drinks are particularly bad
Until the 1980s, the motto for diabetes was: stay away from sugar.
“This sugar ban is basically off the table. A piece of cake or something similar every now and then is okay even if you have diabetes.”
Nutritionist Dr. Astrid Tombek from the Mergentheim Diabetes Center
During therapy you then of course have to calculate the amount of insulin required. Basically, too much sugar or simple carbohydrates, such as those found in white bread, are unhealthy for everyone.
Anyone who often eats sweets always has too much insulin in their blood. This promotes fat accumulation and makes you fat.
“A lot of sugar promotes type 2 diabetes and other diseases. Sugary drinks are particularly bad. They cause blood sugar and insulin levels to rise quickly – even in healthy people.”
Nutritionist Dr. Astrid Tombek
Sugar is hidden in many finished products. A look at the nutritional table reveals this.
Conclusion
The statement that people with diabetes are generally not allowed to eat sugar is not correct.
“However, only enjoy sweets once in a while. Overall, eat as little sugar as possible. Because it is simply unhealthy. And for everyone.”
Nutritionist Dr. Astrid Tombek
