The claim

A gas freighter consumes 3,200 tons of crude oil on the Emirates-Germany route. This corresponds to the CO₂ emissions of all cars worldwide in 5 years.

Our conclusion

The claim is false. Most such tankers are now powered by liquid gas. German road traffic alone already produces four orders of magnitude more CO₂ than a journey by an LNG tanker.

It's this gas freighter - picture with "CO2 emissions like all cars in the world, in 5 years..."

Gas carrier Emirates

The gas freighter that is supposed to bring us the gas from the Emirates consumes 320 tons of crude oil in 24 hours. He is on the road for 10 days. That's 3200 tons of crude oil. This corresponds to the CO2 emissions of all cars in the world over 5 years. But we should leave the car behind. The 1 terawatt hour of gas covers 1%!!!!! our need for gas. Calculated another way, it covers the needs of 65,000 households. Which only sounds better. But it remains 1%. If you still want to and calculate how much the gas will cost us, then it's better we leave it as it is right now. PEOPLE WE ARE ALL BEING RIPLED. Karli and Leonore……you are simply great

The claim verbatim (sic!) on Facebook

Colleagues from Correctiv and AFP have already addressed these issues and have come to the following conclusion that the claim made is FALSE.

Corrective:

From the Emirates to Germany: An LNG tanker produces less CO₂ than all cars worldwide in five years

Incorrect. LNG tankers primarily use gas, not crude oil. Such a tanker would consume around 3,300 tons of fuel and emit around 10,000 tons of CO₂ on the way from the Emirates to Germany, calculated based on the number of kilometers. For comparison: According to the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection, road traffic in Germany alone caused around 148 million tons of CO₂ in 2021. [ for detailed analysis ]

AFP:

No, 20 LNG tankers on their way to Europe do not use as much fuel as all the cars in the world in a year

The claim is false. Modern liquid gas tankers use part of their cargo for propulsion. The global annual fuel consumption in road transport is many times higher than the amount of fuel that 20 LNG tankers would use on their way from the USA to Europe. [ for detailed analysis ]

Mimikama:

Transporting LNG by freighter is not uneconomical. Pipelines from Siberia consume around 10 percent of the gas injected.

Incorrect. We have already refuted the most important arguments in the sharepic above in an older fact check: LNG freighters are rarely operated with crude oil anymore, most of them now run on gas. The CO₂ emissions of such a freighter are several orders of magnitude lower than car traffic worldwide. Compared to gas pipelines from Siberia, gas freighters are even more economical.
