Now that spring is slowly coming back, many people are spending more time outdoors again. However, with the spring-like temperatures, the ticks are also returning. These can often carry bacteria and pathogens that can also be transmitted to humans or pets in the event of a bite.

Common woodbuck

This is the most common type of tick we have in Germany. It is most commonly found along the side of the road in the forest. If they are infected, woodbucks can transmit TBE viruses or Lyme disease, which primarily attacks the skin, joints or the nervous system. There are hundreds of cases of both diseases every year in Baden-Württemberg and Rhineland-Palatinate.

The riparian forest tick

Due to climate change, the alluvial forest tick is now the second most common tick species in Germany, and is particularly widespread in the southwest. It prefers to bite large mammals such as dogs and transmits what is known as canine malaria. The disease can lead to death in dogs after just a few days. In rare cases, the alluvial forest tick also attacks people and can transmit the dreaded TBE virus, which in the worst case can lead to meningitis or paralysis.

Hyalomma tick

The Hyalomma tick is actually native to Africa or the Balkans. It was detected for the first time in Germany in 2015. It is almost as fast as a spider and up to 5 times larger than the woodbuck. She feels particularly comfortable on sand and gravel paths. Unlike the common woodbuck, it is also active in midsummer and even pursues its victims. It has eyes and can use them to spot its prey.

We have already reported several times about the Hyalomma tick: HERE
