A book from 1890 says that the CO2 content in the atmosphere was 0.04 percent, which was actually the same as it is today. Does this reveal that there is no climate change?
It's not just any book, but rather "Meyer's Conversation Lexicon" from 1890, which contains this CO2 value.
This sharepic is circulating on social media in this regard:

Is that actually there?
The value was not changed with image editing software, but was actually there, as you can see, for example, on the pages of the “ Retro Library ”:

Briefly explained: Why is CO2 bad for the climate?
CO2, or carbon dioxide, is a so-called greenhouse gas because, like in a greenhouse, it prevents heat from escaping from the earth into space.
That's good in principle, otherwise it would be bitterly cold here, but if too much heat cannot escape, the earth heats up more and more and global temperatures rise. Carbon dioxide occurs naturally in nature and is reabsorbed by oceans and plants. Since industrialization, however, humans have produced more carbon dioxide, for example by using fossil fuels, than nature can absorb.

The problem with previous measurement methods
If you go by books alone, it becomes problematic anyway, since, for example, in “ The Great Conversations Lexicon for the Educated Classes ” from 1851 it says that the carbon dioxide content in the atmosphere is 0.0004 to 0.005 of the volume (0.04 to 0 .5 percent).

As early as 1984, the measurement methods and results of previous decades were questioned because at that time it was not yet clear how carbon dioxide got into the atmosphere and exactly what influences had an impact on the measurement results. For example, in summer the values are completely different than in winter, and on the coast you get different values than in the big city.
It is therefore important to global values that indicate the average CO2 concentration in the air. Just like when it comes to temperature, you don't just take the measurements from Helsinki or Hawaii, but rather the values from several stations and use them to calculate the global average temperature.
How do you get the global CO 2 values from before?
As early as 1824, Jean-Baptiste Fourier described that atmospheric gases influence the climate. The connection between carbon dioxide and the climate was already being discussed in 1930, and since the 1950s the influence of humans through industrialization has been taken seriously. At that time there were no really reliable measurement methods, as the fluctuating values in the old books show, so it was just a theory at the time. In 1957/58 it was proven that the CO2 concentration in the atmosphere was actually increasing and that this was caused by the use of fossil fuels.
Of course, science is not just resting on its laurels, but is continuing to research whether this is really the case.
In the 1990s, drilling was carried out in Antarctica for the first time in order to measure the CO2 concentration in the air at that time in the trapped air bubbles. Antarctica is also a suitable place for this because it is far away from any industrial emissions, meaning that the measurement results cannot be falsified by the factory next door.
Through these measurements it was found that the values over the past 800,000 years never exceeded 290 ppm (0.029 percent), and that the values have only been rising continuously since the beginning of the 20th century. Of course, ice drilling is not the only method to measure 2

How is it measured today?
Since 1950, measurements have been taken regularly in Hawaii and at the South Pole.
The advantage of measurements at the South Pole should be mentioned again here: Although most of the CO2 is generated by industry in the northern hemisphere, the measured values, for example in the Arctic, would be higher than they actually are globally. The position in Antarctica produces lower measurement results because it takes longer for the CO2 produced in the northern hemisphere to be distributed there. This then ensures that these results are global, not regional, in nature.
What are today's measurements?
Fortunately, there are various sources for this, so if you don't trust NASA, for example (yes, we know all the conspiracy theories surrounding NASA, so far all of them have proven to be nonsense), you can also turn to other sources.
Here we see the results published by NASA:

The measurements from the last 800,000 years, which have increased dramatically since the beginning of industrialization, are clearly visible.
Here are the measurements from NOAA (National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration) on Mauna Loa, Hawaii:

Let's summarize
It has been proven for almost 60 years that industrial carbon dioxide emissions have an impact on the CO 2 content of the atmosphere, which also influences the climate. The percentage may seem very small to most people, but we are talking about several million tons of CO2 that are released into the atmosphere every year through industry.
In addition, one consequence of warming is often ignored: water vapor !
Even the smallest changes in the CO2 content cause more water vapor to be generated through evaporation from the oceans as the earth's surface heats up, and this water vapor even has a greater influence on global temperature! Reducing CO2 emissions gets to the root of the problem, not the symptoms.
It is a bit naive to rely on the statement of a dictionary that was written 130 years ago, at a time when there were no precise measurement methods. Today's measurement methods are much more accurate, but not yet perfect. Nevertheless, the results show that the man-made increase in carbon dioxide actually exists.
Even if we could stop CO2 emissions completely, the climate would still not recover for at least a few decades until the surplus produced was completely eliminated.
