The claim
Ukrainian refugees must declare their assets, including their cars. If these exceed a value of 7,500 euros, you must sell them.
Our conclusion
Cars worth up to 15,000 euros are considered “appropriate”. Only when this value is exceeded can authorities check whether there is a right to social benefits.
Since the start of the war in Ukraine, misinformation and rumors have become a constant presence on social media. One of these claims concerns Ukrainian refugees in Germany and the alleged coercion to sell their cars. But what is behind this claim? We get to the bottom of the facts.
The origin of the rumor “…if the value of the car exceeds 7500 euros”
A July 27, 2023 Facebook post claims Ukrainian refugees will be required to declare all their finances and personal property starting July 1, 2023. If their car was worth more than 7,500 euros, they would allegedly be forced to sell it.

The official position of Germany
Germany says it has taken in over a million war refugees from Ukraine. BMAS made a clear statement on this: Only those who apply for social assistance and can prove their material need have to declare their assets. All other refugees are not checked for their assets.
The myth about the 7500 euro limit
A particularly controversial point in the rumor concerns the alleged 7,500 euro limit for the value of the car. However, the BMAS clarified: This value is actually 15,000 euros and only when this value is exceeded will it be checked whether a claim to social benefits is justified. There are no plans to tighten this regulation.
Conclusion
The rumor that Ukrainian refugees in Germany are being forced to sell their cars is false. An asset test is only possible in special cases, when social assistance is applied for and certain assets are exceeded.
