Some time ago I received a chat message on Facebook: The Japanese WWE wrestler Asuka allegedly wrote to me via her “secret” Facebook account and wanted to ask me, as a loyal fan, to send her money for a flight to Germany I would also like to stay overnight with me. Of course, it was a fake account, which I had a lot of fun with, but not everyone sees through this scam so easily: Scammers specifically seek out fans of celebrities in order to entice them and take their money - as in the case of the woman who transferred money to a fake a-ha singer.
The fake a-ha singer
A 45-year-old woman from Bad Birnbach was probably quite surprised when she apparently received an email from Morten Harket, the singer of the band a-ha (known from the 80s with songs like “ Take on me ” and “ The Sun always shines on TV “) received. Over the next while, the two chatted daily, and “Morten” gained the woman’s trust.
Finally, the alleged singer even offered her a “meet & greet”, i.e. a personal meeting, but she had to pay the costs for the flight, hotel and security. She actually paid €6,550, but only became suspicious when “management” demanded a further €1,000 because “the payment subject was incorrect”.
The woman filed a complaint and the police began an investigation. Unfortunately, she won't have much chance of getting her money back, especially if she transfers the money via bank.
Beware of messages from alleged celebrities!
No, celebrities don't randomly pick fans to chat with. This scam has been around for a long time, and often the scammers don't even make a lot of effort to appear credible, but there are also enough scammers who, as in the woman's case, invest a lot of time in it to get money from their victims, very similar to so-called love scamming .
As cool as it would be if a beloved star suddenly wrote to you, don't fall for it. The mere fact that such contacts always come from “secret” private accounts of the supposed stars, which were usually only created recently, should be warning enough.
