On Thursday (March 28th) an unknown person contacted an older Grevenbroich woman and posed as a bank employee. There have been attempts to access her account. So that he could protect it, she should give him her access data; A “colleague” would then come to pick up the senior’s card. She was concerned and provided the requested information. She also handed her bank card in an envelope on Grabenstrasse to a young woman who was said to be between 20 and 30 years old and around 170 to 175 centimeters tall.

It was only afterwards that the senior citizen recognized the fraud and filed a report.

Criminal Investigation Department 12 has taken over the further investigation. Witnesses are asked to contact the police on 02131 300-0.

The police warn:

Fraudsters are very clever, surprising their victims or putting them under targeted pressure - using different tricks. Do not give out any personal information, PIN numbers or your financial circumstances over the phone. The general rule is: inform the police if you feel suspicious about a call or if you have become a victim of fraud, either on 02131 300-0 or on the emergency number 110.

Mimikama note

In recent months there have been increasing reports of fraudsters impersonating bank employees in order to obtain personal data from bank customers. This scam is not new, but scammers are becoming increasingly sophisticated. In order to educate and protect, we would like to shed light on the modus operandi of these criminals in this warning article and give valuable tips on how to protect yourself from such scams.

Fraudsters often exploit customers' trust in their bank and pose as employees to obtain confidential information. They usually contact their victims by phone, email or social media and fake security problems, account suspensions or similar. The scam works because many people are concerned in such situations and willingly give up their data.

To protect themselves from such fraud, bank customers should heed the following advice

  1. Be suspicious: Banks generally do not ask their customers to reveal personal information such as passwords, PINs or TANs by telephone or email. If you receive such a request, be skeptical and question the reason.
  2. Check contact details: If you are contacted by what appears to be a bank representative, check that the phone number or email address provided matches your bank's official contact details.
  3. Do not reveal any data: Never share confidential information such as passwords, PINs or TANs with strangers - not even with supposed bank employees.
  4. If you are unsure, call your bank: If you are unsure whether the call or email really came from your bank, contact your bank branch or customer service yourself and have the matter confirmed.
  5. Update your security software: Keep your computer and mobile devices equipped with the latest security software to protect against malware and phishing attempts.
