The Hamburg consumer advice center warns of a criminal scam on the telephone. The fraudsters pose as employees of Hamburger Sparkasse and inform those they call about an allegedly suspicious booking in their accounts. At the same time, the fraudsters offer to stop the booking. To do this, the called party should authorize the process with their push TAN on the phone. Only with the push TAN is it possible for the fraudsters to actually transfer the supposedly suspicious booking from the called party's account.
As a rule, Haspa does not call its customers unsolicited
“As a rule, Haspa does not call its customers unsolicited,” says Kerstin Föller from the Hamburg consumer advice center. “Those called should not be deceived by a number that appears to belong to Haspa.”
In a case before the consumer advocates, the consumer called checked the caller's telephone number during the conversation. It matched Haspa down to the last digit.
“If consumers are asked to give passwords or TANs over the phone, this is always an indication of fraud,” continues Föller. “Those called should then end the conversation immediately and contact their bank directly by telephone.”
However, if the person you call has fallen for the scammers and given out their push TAN or passwords, you need to act quickly. Those affected should block their account and online access by calling 116 116 and report it to the police.
In contrast to a direct debit, which can be reversed by the account holder, this is usually not possible with a transfer authorized by the account holder.
Fallen for the scam?
“That’s why a criminal complaint to the police is very important in such cases,” says Föller. “The police may be able to identify the recipients and then, if necessary, sue those affected for repayment of the money.”
