In both cases the conversation began with an automatic recorded announcement. It explained that the callee's ID card had been misused and that they should press the "1" key to be connected to an employee.

In the first case, a 31-year-old citizen from Westhofen complied and was put through to an alleged Europol employee. In addition to the announcement, the fraudster informed her that she was suspected of money laundering. The 31-year-old was subsequently instructed to secure the assets in her account by purchasing Google Play cards from a store.

She then passed on the voucher card numbers over the phone. After the 31-year-old was instructed to buy more cards again, she began to doubt the authenticity of the call and finally noticed the fraud. At this point, however, financial damage in the low four-digit range had already occurred. In the second case, a 39-year-old woman from Worms ended the conversation immediately after the announcement ended.

Note: The police would never ask you to transfer or hand over money or other valuables.

Never give information about your financial or other living situation over the phone! If in doubt, contact the nearest police station or dial 110!

  • Do not allow yourself to be drawn into a conversation or put under pressure - Europol has no authority to impose fines or take any other criminal action against you. Simply hang up and do not press any key on your telephone, even if you are asked to do so by an announcement!
  • Never hand over money to strangers!
  • If you receive such a call, inform your local police station or report the matter via our online watchdog. If you have actually received financial damages, please file a report immediately.
