This warning is very timely and should reach as many people as possible! Fraudsters invent hair-raising legends and frighten victims – Warning: “Fake Police” series continues!

Another Paderborn couple (79/82) almost became victims of “fake police officers” on Monday and lost a five-figure sum. Fortunately, the bank branch did not have the amount in stock. Telephone scammers have been massively active again in the Paderborn district since Sunday and are demanding large sums of money, some of them with hair-raising legends.

As reported (police report from September 3rd, 2018), a senior couple (77/78) from Elsen took a five-figure sum from the bank on Monday. The perpetrators had the money deposited at an agreed location so that they could “pick it up” unnoticed. The police do not rule out the possibility that there are other victims who have not yet reported to the real police. On Monday, further reports were received from Paderborn, Elsen and Bad Lippspringe. Alleged victims who were called by the fraudsters continued to report on Tuesday morning.

Despite constant warnings through police reports as well as publications on police social media and the resulting reporting in daily newspapers, on radio and television, the perpetrators always manage to make prey. They are so adept at convincing their victims of their fictitious legends over the phone that any prevention advice from the police falls flat.

In the current cases, the victims were also aware of the “fake police” scam.

Nevertheless, the perpetrators “grabbed” the seniors. They scare them, build up enormous pressure and prevent them from calming down. The phone is constantly ringing and the “fake police officers” lull the victims with new “information”. The legends become increasingly wild and frightening. The perpetrators no longer only report burglaries in the neighborhood but also brutal robberies in which the neighbors were seriously injured. The police were able to arrest the perpetrators, but accomplices are on the run. There is an acute risk of an attack on those called. Cash and valuables are no longer safe. Another call informs them that a robbery victim has died.

If the perpetrators learn through their persistent questions that the victims have large sums of money in bank accounts, their criminal story will be spun further. Bank employees are in cahoots with the criminals. They transferred the victims' money to secret accounts abroad or exchanged it for counterfeit money. In their hearings, those called describe that they were to be used as decoys. The money should be withdrawn immediately. Then you can check it for counterfeit money or – so the legend goes – you can strike and arrest the gang. If the victims are on the way to the bank or even in the bank, the perpetrators try to maintain contact via cell phone in order to continually exert influence and dispel growing doubts.

Sounds incredible, right? The perpetrators manage to make victims so insecure and afraid that they doubt but continue to follow the perpetrators' instructions. Using arguments such as “the police phones are being tapped by the criminals,” the perpetrators also manage to prevent the real police from calling back. The perpetrators know the police's prevention instructions and always find excuses why they don't work right now. But calling the real police back would immediately expose the fraud.

That's why the police's appeal is:

  • We will never ask you about your assets over the phone or ask you to deposit or hand over money or valuables to us.
  • If you receive such calls, do not respond to the callers. Hang up and call the real police on 110!

The police's big request to the younger generations: warn and inform your older relatives, neighbors or acquaintances. Thematize the scams with the “fake police officers” or the “grandchild trick”.
