This scam is called “CEO fraud” and has been known for years. Based on current information, the police are again warning about this scam involving the “wrong superiors”.

The fraudsters pose as supervisors or managers and usually contact employees via email. They have to look closely, because the fraudsters have copied the names of the superiors with the corresponding email addresses and company signatures. In many companies, the CEO's data is published on the Internet and email addresses often follow a simple combination of the employee's name and the name of the company.

In the emails, employees are instructed to transfer large sums of money to other people's accounts. Anyone who falls for the fake sender addresses and signatures and does not take other reassurances in advance can get a company into serious financial difficulties.

In order to recognize such fraud attempts in good time, the following tips are helpful:

  • Raise awareness among your employees about these and other scams. Education is the best way to make things difficult for fraudsters.
  • Be careful about what information you publish about the company. Also think about company-related information on your employees' private accounts on social media or on professional portals, such as information about their place of work and their professional email address.
  • Introduce regulated control mechanisms. If you have become a victim of fraud, report it to the police. This is the only way current meshes can be recognized and appropriate warnings can be issued.
