A report has been buzzing around the international press for a few days: Finland's head of government wants to introduce a 4-day week.

Bild ", the " Berliner Morgenpost ", the " Stern ", " Kontrast " and the " Tagesspiegel , among others, reported on the statements of the new Prime Minister Sanna Marin, but at least in most articles the statement is put into perspective again. But the newspapers were also buzzing internationally, with “ Independent ,” “ ITV ,” “ The Sun ” and “ Daily Mail ” also reporting on it, although some of their articles have since been corrected.

But the report also sounds too good:
The 34-year-old Prime Minister Sanna Marin is said to have expressed plans that in the future people will only work on four days in Finland, and that working hours should be a maximum of six hours!

The problem with the whole thing: There are no such plans!
On December 10, 2019, Finland's government program was adopted, which can be viewed here (in English) . But there is no such regulation there! So how does this claim come about?

The start of the reports

The Finnish site “ News Now ” investigated the matter and was able to clearly reveal how the claim came about.

As early as December 2019, shortly after the Finnish government was formed, the Austrian site “ Contrast ” reported on the Prime Minister’s statement. This meant that more and more media picked up the report, first internationally

But when exactly is Sanna Marin supposed to have made this statement?
To do this we have to go back a little, namely to August 2019 !

The origin of the quote

In August 2019, several politicians and party activists from the Finnish SDP party met in Turku on the southwest coast of Finland to celebrate the party's 120th anniversary.

But it wasn't just a celebration, there were also lectures and a panel discussion. Among the participants in the discussion was the then Transport Minister Sanna Marin, who is now Prime Minister.

To be clear, this panel discussion among the politicians was not about new program items in the government (the government program had already been firmly established for two months at that point), but largely about the party itself and its history.

During the discussion, Matin suggested that Finland's productivity could perhaps be increased by introducing either a 4-day week or She also tweeted about this idea:

In German:

Shorter working hours can and should be discussed. A 4-day week or a 6-hour day with a decent wage may be utopian today, but could become a reality in the future.

She refers to her previous tweet in which she mentions that labor productivity has increased significantly over the last hundred years and that shortening working hours to 8 hours has been one of the SDP's most important social goals.

The statement was also mentioned in the Finnish press

Summary

The current Prime Minister of Finland, Sanna Marin, said this both in a panel discussion celebrating the party and on Twitter back in August 2019 . At that time, Marin was still Secretary of Transportation.

This was also just an idea from Marin, not the party's current plan. Sanna Marin describes the idea itself as a utopia, but one that may perhaps be possible in the more distant future.
