According to available information, the injured parties are usually first contacted via SMS. These messages contain a fake savings bank link that the fraudsters use to gain access to the victim's online banking system. From this point on, the perpetrators can freely “look around” the attacked account.

Call follows SMS

At a later date, sometimes weeks later, an alleged bank employee calls the victim. The perpetrators use technical manipulation, so-called call ID spoofing, with the help of which the number of the savings bank appears on the victim's phone display.

Because the perpetrators already had access to the account, they have protected information. For example, they know the name of an otherwise familiar bank employee or have knowledge of transactions made or the account balance.

However, in order to commission transactions themselves, the perpetrators need a TAN or push TAN approval. The fraudsters elicit these information from the injured party via the call in question as a supposed bank employee.

Last Monday, January 23rd, 2023, a 52-year-old from the district reported to the police who was the victim of this scam and thus lost a low five-figure amount of money.

In this context, the following safety instructions are issued:

  • Never access online banking via a link sent to you
  • If in doubt, call your bank using the phone number you know. Do not use the call back button!
  • Remember: The bank never asks for TANs or other sensitive data over the phone
  • Inform relatives, friends and acquaintances about this scam
