During their perfidious calls, they target their victims' valuables or bank details. For some time now, fraudsters have been posing as Microsoft employees over the phone. On Monday afternoon (June 27th), an Oberhausen resident (67) suddenly received a call from England (0044208…). An alleged Microsoft employee told him that his computer was infected with a Trojan (malware) and that urgent countermeasures had to be taken.
Unfortunately, the Oberhausen resident had been struggling with the pitfalls of his computer all day, so he was surprised about the uninvited call, but then decided to have a longer conversation with the fraudster.
Fake Microsoft employee gains access to the computer
He finally gained access to the computer and also got his victim's account details. He kept the Oberhausen man waiting for several hours with new explanations and tall tales. During this time, the criminals plundered the account with several unauthorized debits. A few hours earlier, the fraudsters had used the same scam to deprive a 58-year-old Oberhausen woman of her savings.
In both cases, during the course of the conversation, the victims agreed to make payments via KLARNA for alleged expired license fees. They also transmitted personal data and copies of ID cards.
The investigators strongly advise:
- Always keep personal information secret!
- Copies of ID cards are absolutely taboo for strangers!
- Be sure to prevent access to your computer!
If you follow this advice consistently, telephone scammers will quickly lose interest and give up. But if you have your personal data and account information, your account will be raided while you are still on the phone with the criminals! In any case, inform the police.
