Facebook corrects post
Facebook has added a correction notice to a user post that was criticized by the government in Singapore. Why this? In order to comply with the controversial law against the spread of supposedly false news on the Internet.
The “Online Counterfeiting and Manipulation Protection Act” came into force in October and was passed by the Singapore Parliament in May. This law stipulates that traditional media and Internet companies must remove articles if they are asked to do so by the government. There is also the possibility that they will be forced to publish correction notices.

Reference to the government in Singapore
Since Saturday, the note has been found under an affected entry in the “States Times Review”.
“Facebook is required by law to tell you that the Singapore government says this post contains false information.”
According to media reports, this post is said to be a blog by an Australian who is critical of the government. He was asked by the relevant authority to correct the post as they believed it was untrue. Since he initially did not comply with this request, the authority is said to have directly requested that Facebook publish a correction notice. Whatever happened next.
Critics fear restrictions on press freedom
The law not only affects content on the Internet in general, but also social networks such as Facebook, Twitter and Google. All of these corporations have large branches in Singapore. Now critics fear that this law will further restrict press freedom in the authoritarian country.
Juicy punishments
In extreme cases, individuals face a fine of up to 66,000 euros and a maximum of ten years in prison. Companies and organizations face a fine of up to 663,000 euros in the event of a violation.
