Just in time, a woman from the Landstuhl community pulled the ripcord, so to speak, on Thursday and prevented fraud. As the 55-year-old reported to the police, she had revealed her credit card details and provided a copy of her ID too quickly and too gullibly.
The background was that the woman wanted to cancel a flight she had already booked due to illness. When she searched the internet, she was shown a telephone number from southern Germany for such cancellations. When she called the number, she was offered a refund of several hundred euros. To do this, she should provide her credit card number, send a copy of her ID card and download a specific app on her cell phone.
After the 55-year-old followed the instructions, she suddenly had doubts as to whether the whole procedure was serious. She then had her credit card blocked - and learned from her bank that a debit of several hundred euros had already been registered. The woman suffered no financial loss as a result of the card being blocked. The Fraud Commissioner has now started the investigation.
