Unknown man pretends to be a police officer
A 78-year-old from Limburgerhof was contacted by phone by a fake police officer on Wednesday (September 7th, 2022). Your friend caused an accident. In order to prevent the girlfriend from being taken into custody, a deposit of 135,000 euros would have to be paid. Since the 78-year-old only had 80,000 euros, the deposit was set at 80,000 euros. The senior citizen then withdrew 80,000 euros and handed the envelope to a woman she did not know at a previously agreed location.
Follow the tips from your police to protect yourself from telephone fraud:
- The police will never ask you for money or ask you to hand over money or valuables.
- The police will never call you on the police emergency number 110. Only scammers do that. If you are unsure, ask your police station. Never use the callback function on your phone for this; instead, dial the number yourself.
- It is best to have the number of your local police station and the emergency number 110 handy on the phone so that you can dial them yourself if in doubt.
- If you also received a suspicious call, report it to your police station.
