The claim

A viral social media post claims UNICEF founder Peter Dalglish was arrested in Nepal on child abuse charges.

Our conclusion

While Dalglish was indeed convicted of child abuse, he is not the founder of UNICEF.

Back in 2019 , we investigated a viral social media post that claimed the founder of UNICEF had been arrested for child abuse. Now, three years later, the same post seems to be going viral again and we have decided to revisit the topic to ensure the right information is disseminated.

Note: Peter Dalglish is not the founder of UNICEF

The posting shows a photo showing Peter Dalglish, incorrectly described as the founder of UNICEF, next to a child. The accusation is serious: Dalglish is said to have been arrested in Nepal for child abuse.

To clarify the facts:

  1. Peter Dalglish is NOT the founder of UNICEF. UNICEF, the United Nations Children's Fund, was founded by the United Nations General Assembly in 1946, long before Dalglish's birth in 1957.
  2. The founder was Ludwik Rajchman and died in 1965.
  3. Peter Dalglish is a well-known Canadian humanitarian worker and former UN representative. He was actually arrested in Nepal in 2018 and later convicted of sexually abusing minors.
  4. It is important to emphasize that Dalglish's crimes are not directly related to his work at UNICEF. Although he served in various capacities at the UN, his crimes do not reflect the values or actions of UNICEF.

Overall, the viral messages contain true and false information. While the allegations against Dalglish are true, the claim that he is the founder of UNICEF is false.

Particularly when there are serious allegations, it is important to critically question information on social media platforms and check the facts. False reports can result in organizations such as UNICEF, which work to improve the living conditions of children worldwide, being unfairly discredited.
