The claim

The Ukrainian Defense Ministry is using a video to mobilize homosexuals for the army. The video allegedly came from an informant from the ministry.

Our conclusion

It is a false claim. The video comes from Great Britain in 2012. It is intended to counteract discrimination against marriage between homosexual couples. It was manipulated for the fake.

It is an official recruiting video, according to the Facebook post . It's about the mobilization of homosexuals in the Ukrainian army by the Ukrainian Defense Ministry. The video comes directly from an informant from the ministry – writes the author in the comments. “… this group should take up arms……. Then the teenagers came,” it continues.

The video on Facebook already shows that it is misinformation and that the video has been checked by independent fact checkers. dpa fact check ” can also be found in the attachment to the posting

The video comes from Great Britain and was subsequently changed

The video shows a male soldier being received by his male partner after a mission. They hug each other deeply - at the end he proposes to his partner and they kiss. In the fake video, at 00:24 minutes, war scenes and men in Ukrainian uniforms are shown; the emblem of the Ukrainian troops and a telephone number are shown in the credits.

the dpa fact check, the video dates from 2012 and does not originally come from Ukraine, but from Great Britain. The clip from the organization “Coalition for Equal Marriage” was intended to counteract discrimination against marriage between gay couples. Huffington Post on April 25, 2012 under the title "Homecoming." The video was described in the article as "a short film about gay marriage" aimed at "raising support for equality through social media."

The dpa fact check also revealed:

The video currently circulating has been changed in several places:

  • Scenes from the original in which the British flag can be seen are missing from the fake.
  • emblem of the Ukrainian ground forces was subsequently added at the bottom left
  • Music is playing that cannot be heard in the original.
  • The makers of the fake have added scenes of the Ukrainian army, in which a uniform with the Ukrainian emblem can briefly be seen.
  • In the original, several sentences appear towards the end and the clip ends with the demand “Stop discrimination against marriage”. The fake contains Ukrainian sentences and a telephone number.
