Police warn of fraudsters' scams

In recent days there has been an increasing number of cases in which mainly older people have been called by fraudsters.

So far, 25 affected people have contacted the police and reported such calls. The perpetrators pretend to be from the police, engage those they call in a conversation and try to gain their trust. The criminals specifically ask about the financial situation and report about burglars who are supposed to focus on those affected.

They ask people to hand over money and valuables to someone collecting them for safekeeping with the police or to transfer their cash to a supposedly safe account. The callers can see 110 or 0211-8700 on the display - this is intended to further support the seriousness of the calls.

The police give the following tips:

  • Never provide information about your financial circumstances or other sensitive data!
  • Never give money or valuables to strangers, including messengers or alleged employees of the police or other institutions!
  • The police never take cash or jewelry into custody for security!
  • When you call the police, the number 110 or 0211-8700 never appears on the display!
  • If you receive a call like this, ask for the name and office, hang up and dial 110. Describe the matter to the police!
