The fraudsters target company founders and demand a fee for entry in the commercial register.

As the Trier police reported, the two victims each registered a company with the Wittlich district court. Shortly after registering, they received an invoice that apparently came from the Wittlich district court.

You were asked to pay a fee for entry in the commercial register, on which further processing was made dependent. The entrepreneurs transferred the three-digit amount to the unknown perpetrators and only later realized that they were counterfeits.

There is a suspicion that the perpetrators are specifically writing to newly founded companies for which such an invoice appears credible. They are probably researching this in publicly available announcements.

If you suspect anything, check the letter to ensure that all information is correct. In particular regarding:

  • Address and name of the biller
  • Telephone numbers
  • File number
  • Content errors

The police advise:

If in doubt, contact the responsible authority in person or by telephone. Do not use the phone number in the letter, look for it yourself.

If you have any questions, please contact the Trier Criminal Investigation Department on 0651/9779 2290 or any other police station.
