Counterfeit money: The Bavarian State Criminal Police Office is currently warning about the spread of so-called “movie money”.

The counterfeit money is so-called “movie money”. These are banknotes that were produced for the entertainment sector, for example for film shoots or magic shows.

There has been a significant increase in the confiscation of counterfeit money across Europe since mid-2019.

As the Bavarian police report, these counterfeit banknotes are only harmless if they differ from real money in size and color. In addition, there must be clear information on the means of payment that identifies this as “Movie Money”.

In Bavaria alone, however, 46 cases were reported in which “movie money” was found to not meet these criteria and therefore was very similar and likely to be confused with real money. More than 40 cases were reported in Bavaria in the first two weeks of October. €5, €10, €20 and €50 notes were particularly affected. These notes are predominantly produced in Asia.

In a current case, the counterfeit money experts from the Bavarian State Criminal Police Office, together with the Munich I public prosecutor's office, are investigating a pair of French brothers who wanted to pay with a counterfeit 20 euro note in a marquee at the Munich Oktoberfest on October 4th, 2019. The attentive waitress recognized the counterfeit and called the police.

The Bavarian State Criminal Police Office warns urgently against the use of “Movie Money” in payment transactions. Counterfeiting money is a crime and is punishable by high penalties.
