A false report was currently spreading via WhatsApp that every recipient of child benefit was also entitled to a child allowance of 184 euros.

At the moment we are receiving inquiries similar to this one: “There is currently an (audio) message going around on Whatsapp saying that everyone, no matter how much they earn, is entitled to the full child allowance for a maximum of 6 months (supposedly €184, actually €185) received for each child. Personally, I don't believe in it, as there are actually different salary requirements. On the one hand, a minimum income of €600 for single parents or €900 for couples, and on the other hand, a maximum amount that would exclude the child allowance, but is calculated individually. For example, the amount of rent to be paid plays a role here. How do you feel about this dubious Whatsapp message?”

Is that correct? Is there a general entitlement to a child allowance of 184 euros?

No, this is not true. The employment agency announces: The false report is currently spreading on social media that every recipient of child benefit is also entitled to a child allowance of 184 euros. Although the rigid upper income limit has been lifted since the beginning of the year, the supplement still depends on the parents' income and assets.

The rigid upper income limit was lifted on January 1, 2020, but if parents earn more than they need for themselves, the supplement is gradually reduced individually depending on the income and assets of the parents and children until there is no longer any entitlement.

Depending on the family's financial situation, the child allowance can be up to 185 euros per month per child. You can find out quickly and easily whether it is worth submitting an application to the responsible family fund of the Federal Employment Agency with the KiZ pilots at www.kinderzuschlag.de . You can also apply for the child allowance directly online.
