Social media is repeatedly used to spread false information in order to influence or even manipulate political discourse. Currently, such a false report is circulating repeatedly, which specifically creates sentiment against the party “The Greens” and the member of the Bundestag faction Alliance 90/The Greens Katrin Göring-Eckardt.
The misleading message has been spread again in the form of a sharepic since May 2023, which depicts an alleged statement by Göring-Eckardt. This suggests that the top candidate had trivialized the sexual assaults in Schorndorf and presented them as a 'cry for help' from the refugees. The alleged quote is: “The sexual assaults in Schorndorf can by no means be excused, but they show a cry for help from the refugees because their feelings are not respected enough by German women…”
Fake news on Facebook targets “The Greens„
It is this sharepic from May 14, 2023

This quote, if real, would be extremely politically controversial and potentially damaging to the Greens' image. We therefore contacted the party's campaign manager, Robert Heinrich, and waited for a statement. We have HERE that the statement is a false report.
The sharepic appeared for the first time in 2017. At that time the statement had already been denied. From a report by Bayerischer Rundfunk we also learn that the politician has legally defended herself against the spread of this false quote.
“Katrin Göring-Eckardt never said anything like that, nor anything similar. The quote: made up to hurt the Greens. Experiences that Green Party campaign manager Robert Heinrich has already had several times.”
Heinrich confirms this information and adds:
“It has happened again and again that in the right-wing environment, false reports about the Greens were spread thousands of times and then with the organization of a community.” ( Source )
This situation highlights the ongoing problem of misinformation spread on social media platforms. It highlights the need to critically examine sources of information and emphasize the fact that not everything shared on social media platforms is true.
