Fan heaters are not your salvation!

Many people are currently buying electric fan heaters. They believe this will allow them to heat alternatively/cheaper in the winter. But that's nonsense. There are much better ways.

Author: Andre Wolf

It seems as if many people still don't understand anything. Really nothing. Fan heaters instead of gas-powered heaters. This course of action turns one energy sin into another, but does not solve the problem. However, this is exactly where the shadow problem becomes apparent: apparently some people are not able to understand the situation. Logical thinking probably doesn't go beyond your own wallet (which is nothing new).

Let's look at the situation analytically for a moment.
Initial situation: We use too much energy. We use too many resources. We have an energy crisis. We are dealing with man-made climate change.

In the next step, a few consequences: The next winter will come. It will get cold again (logically), even if the winters in our latitudes are no longer nearly as freezing as they once were. We don't want to freeze, but energy will be expensive. It doesn't matter what type of energy is used for heat.

Misconception at this point: Switch from one expensive energy source (gas) to another energy source that could probably be a little cheaper. This thought should obviously prevail when buying a fan heater (electric).

But what actually happens with an electric fan heater?

Admittedly, the fan heater itself is efficient and works quite simply. Electric current is passed through a wire, causing the wire to give off heat (it glows). This warms the air in the nearby area. Electrical energy is ultimately converted into low-temperature heat. This low temperature is swirled by an electrically operated propeller and is intended to permanently warm a room.

But is that the solution now? No! Ramona Pop, the chairwoman of the Federal Association of Consumer Organizations, recently told the “Editorial Network Germany”:

“You don’t save any money with fan heaters, on the contrary, you drive up your electricity bill,” “There is also the risk that the power distribution networks will be overloaded if a large number of fan heaters are turned on.”

Dr. sees it very similarly. Martin Kleimaier, head of the “Generation and Storage of Electrical Energy” department at the Energy Technology Society in the VDE (VDE ETG). On futurezone.at we read:

“We view the current development with some concern because our power supply is not designed for such a simultaneous additional load.”
“Since the heaters are simply connected to a household socket, they can - in contrast to electric heat pumps or so-called night storage heaters - in the case of If there is a threat of network overload, the network operator cannot switch it off.”

I'll go further and say: Anyone who simply replaces one problematic energy source with another problematic energy source has not understood our problem. It's not about continuing to waste energy, but rather reducing energy use!

Avoiding energy sources makes sense. Of course, no one wants to freeze. Me neither. But what are the energy-saving alternatives? Well, we don't need to invent them, we already know them!

Let grandma knit you thick socks!

For my part, I have taken other precautions and am prepared to wear warm and cozy clothing inside the apartment. Thick socks. Cozy sweater, a cozy blanket on the sofa. Of course there will be no freezing temperatures inside my apartment, but I will significantly reduce the heating.

Also just look at where there is a draft in the apartment (under the doors?) and insulate it. Avoid constant ventilation. I know, Germany in particular is “the only country in the world” where people suffocate because they don’t open windows. But you should give up a little from this fear. A little fact check with a winking emoji: No, no one will suffocate in their own house if the windows are closed (problems with air pollution are ignored)! There is enough air to breathe . Other countries even make fun of the “national obsession” with ventilation, but that doesn’t have to be an issue here ( compare ).

There are certainly many justifications…

Of course, I am aware that there will now be a lot of anecdotal justifications. “But the children”, “But my sick grandmother”, “Do you want me to be cold?” Well, energy prices and climate change won't interest your children, your grandmother, or your own well-being. The problems are not me or my text.

So think again! Don't replace energy with energy, but rather avoid energy consumption. And the solutions do not always have to be new.
