1. How do I explain to my child what terrorism is?

  • Answer: Use simple, age-appropriate language. You might say: “Terrorism is when people intentionally want to hurt others in order to spread fear and achieve their goals. Such events are very rare and many people are working hard to protect us.” It is important to provide realistic information without causing unnecessary fear.

2. How can I convey security to my child?

  • Answer: Reassure your child that he or she is safe. Explain that police, emergency responders, and many others work every day to keep the community safe. Emphasize the measures taken in schools and public places to ensure safety.

3. What should I do if my child learns of a terrorist attack?

  • Answer: Stay calm and listen to your child. Give your child space to express their feelings and answer their questions honestly, but with age consideration. Avoid excessive details and help your child put the information into context.

4. How can I encourage my child to talk about their fears?

  • Answer: Create an open and supportive environment. Regularly ask your child how they are feeling and encourage them to share their worries and fears. Show understanding and offer comfort without judging your child's feelings.

5. Should I allow my child to watch news about terrorism?

  • Answer: Limit media consumption and make sure the content is age-appropriate. When your child watches the news, be there to answer questions and discuss what they see together. Help your child distinguish between facts and speculation.

8. How do I deal with my own fear so that I can better support my child?

Background to the creation of the FAQ

This FAQ was created in the context of a worrying security situation that has rocked Austria in recent days. On August 8, 2024, Interior Minister Gerhard Karner, General Director Franz Ruf and DSN Director Omar Haijawi-Pirchner informed the public about the planned terrorist attacks on Taylor Swift concerts in Vienna. This news caused concern across the country as the threat was deemed real and concrete.

The security authorities were able to thwart a planned attack in which a 19-year-old main suspect, with the support of two young accomplices, planned an attack on crowds outside the stadium. The fact that such threats exist has many parents concerned about how to talk to their children about these issues and allay their fears.

The FAQ is intended to help parents support their children during this uncertain time. It offers practical tips and answers to common questions to empower parents to speak openly and sensitively to their children about the threat of terrorism. The goal is to give children a sense of security and help them deal with their fears while staying informed about the reality of the threat. This FAQ was created to support parents in the challenging task of finding the balance between informing and protecting their children.
