The claim
Fauci allegedly admitted in interviews that research was being carried out on the SARS-CoV-2 virus in Ukraine and China.
Our conclusion
The quotes are fictitious; there are no sources for them, not even from the source mentioned “Fox News”. The only opinion pieces found there are similar claims from political commentator Tucker Carlson, which in turn are based on unproven conspiracy myths.
In mid-August, US immunologist Anthony Fauci announced that he would resign . Now he is said to have given several interviews in which he admitted out of turn that “ on the COVID-19 virus ” was being carried out in Ukraine and China.
The widespread text about Fauci
The claim was spread on Telegram and various sites, but was even deleted there. Under the link provided to the text in the “Russians & Friends” group on August 27th, message 10396 is immediately followed by message 10398.

“Fox News” is said to have reported on the quotes.
In particular, he admitted that American scientists were working on the COVID-19 virus not only in Wuhan, China, but also in several laboratories in Ukraine.
When asked why so many special laboratories were opened in Ukraine, he replied:
“Experiments were carried out there that are very important for the national security of the United States.
They are extremely dangerous and it is illegal to carry them out on US territory. And we paid the Ukrainians good money and they were happy." "It wasn't that difficult to convince Kiev, we were even able to open several laboratories in China," said the retired official, "the Chinese only knew about a few, relatively safe work, but not by everyone. The Ukrainians, on the other hand, had no idea about most of our experiments.”
The quotes are nowhere to be found
Now “Fox News” has been internationally known at least since Donald Trump’s US presidency, as he has repeatedly officially described it as his favorite channel. This is for good reason, as “Fox News” always repeated Trump’s claims very unthinkingly and thus spread many false claims even further.
But even now, “Fox News” doesn’t exactly cover itself with honor, especially when it comes to its political commentator Tucker Carlson , whose often provocative opinions are often taken as facts in certain circles. Carlson also claimed a few things about Fauci, which we'll get to in a moment.
Regarding the second alleged quote, according to which several laboratories have even been opened in China, even “Fox News” itself, which is supposed to be the source, contradicts it: Accordingly, they themselves do not know whether so-called “gain-of-function research” ( Gain-of-function research ) was carried out - they simply assume so because in their opinion (!) “ Fauci has lied many times before ”.
However, the quotes mentioned above cannot be found on “Fox News” or on any other site that published interviews with Fauci. They are simply fictitious.
Carlson and Fauci – Not great friends
Many controversial articles and news stories on “Fox News” insist on one thing above all else: opinion. The above claim, for example, that Fauci has lied many times and that might be why gain-of-function research exists in China, is an opinion article by Republican Senator from Kentucky Rand Paul .
Tucker Carlson also likes to work on Fauci and on August 22nd his resignation as an opportunity to express his opinion (!) about Fauci's performance during the corona pandemic. It must also be emphasized again that this is his opinion, also marked as “opinion” in the linked article, since Carlson does not provide any evidence for his statements.
The website “ Science ” has dealt intensively with this and refuted every single claim made by Carlson about Fauci with facts or at least exposed it as misleading. Carlson also commented on gain-of-function research, and his statements are very similar to Fauci's alleged quote:
“OK, gain-of-function research, that was ongoing. Since it is not allowed in this country, they have outsourced it to various laboratories, including one owned by the Chinese government and many biolabs in Ukraine.”
Tucker Carlson on Fox News
Gain-of-function research is about an organism with new capabilities and examining how this affects its properties. This research also created modified viruses in laboratories that could potentially have caused pandemics, which is why the US government stopped funding for gain-of-function research in 2014.
What doesn't stop at this point are conspiracy myths, which often have as a background the fact that the US government is secretly continuing to research. Tucker's statements are based exactly on such conspiracy myths: he simply claims that gain-of-function research is now being carried out in Ukraine and China, but does not provide a single piece of evidence for this.
The only evidence often cited is research whose results were published in 2015 (see HERE ). But even though it was about coronaviruses in bats, it was about the SHC014-CoV virus, which is only very, very distantly related to SARS-CoV-2.
Another of Carlson's claims turns out to be misleading. He pointed to an email that Fauci received in early 2020 from a virologist named Kristian Andersen, who suggested that some of the features of the SARS-CoV-2 virus might also have been created artificially.
Andersen actually wrote this email. What Tucker Carlson didn't mention, however, was that just two months later, a study by Andersen was published in “nature medicine” (see HERE ), in which he explained why the pandemic virus was most likely not manipulated.
Andersen also explained the change in his previous assumption to the New York Times (see HERE Accordingly, Andersen looked at a location in the virus's genome that makes up less than 0.1% but has never been seen in similar viruses, which is why he raised the question of whether this location in the virus may have been created artificially.
However, just a few days after he sent the email, it became clear that this feature also appears in other coronaviruses and is difficult to find because it only makes up a tiny fraction of the entire genome. The same sequences were then discovered specifically in other coronaviruses found in bats and pangolins.
“ Overall, this is a textbook example of the scientific method, where a tentative hypothesis is discarded in favor of a competing hypothesis after more data is available and analyzes are completed ,” Andersen said.
Let's summarize
- The alleged Fauci quotes mentioned cannot be found anywhere, not even on “Fox News.”
- However, there are similar statements in op-eds by Tucker Carlson on “Fox News,” which, however, are based on unproven conspiracy myths
- The email from a virologist from 2020 is cited as evidence that the virus was artificially created, but what is left out is that the same virologist revised his assumption at the time after more detailed investigations
Fauci never said that the COVID-19 virus came from a laboratory in Ukraine or China.
