Why this urgent message from 'Facebook' may not be what it seems. Just yesterday, a Facebook user received a disturbing message on her messenger. It seemed as if her world stopped for a moment. The content? A threatening message claiming their page had been reported six times for violations. The content of the message:

The message begins: "T‌h‌i‌s‌ P‌a‌g‌e‌ H‌a‌s‌ B‌e‌e‌n‌ Reported Six Times INC International Concepts has reported that your article:"

“T‌h‌i‌s‌ P‌a‌g‌e‌ H‌a‌s‌ B‌e‌e‌n‌ Reported Six Times INC International Concepts has reported that your article: 1. Using someone else's fake name/photo. 2. Share content that misleads other users. Unfortunately, in this case the user clicked on the link. This led them to what appeared to be a Facebook login page. Assuming it was a message from Facebook, she entered her login details there! As a result of this ill-advised action, the user not only lost her private Facebook account, but also the associated groups and Facebook pages of which she was the administrator.

Attraction of an official message

Imagine opening your Messenger and seeing a message claiming to be an official announcement from Facebook. That's worrying, isn't it? Fraudsters know this and take advantage of it. Human instinct tells us that when an authority – in this case a major platform like Facebook – contacts us, we must respond.

The dangerous illusion

The Facebook user is just one of many who fall for this scam. At first glance, the URL looks legitimate. The message is formal and sounds threatening. But upon closer inspection, there are some telltale signs. For example, the strange numbers in the URL or the fact that such a notification would normally appear not via Messenger, but directly on the platform.

How exactly does this scam work?

After clicking the link, users are redirected to a fake login page. There he will be asked to enter his access data. And bang! The fraudsters have what they wanted: your login details. This allows them to access your account, steal your information, impersonate you, and more.

It is in our nature to respond to threats, especially when they come from a supposedly trustworthy source. In addition, fraudsters have the art of making such messages appear as realistic as possible.

How can you protect yourself from messages like “T‌h‌i‌s‌ P‌a‌g‌e‌ H‌a‌s‌ B‌e‌e‌n‌ Reported…”

Recovering a hacked Facebook account can be a stressful process, but in many cases it is entirely possible. Here is a step-by-step guide to recover a hacked Facebook account:

  1. Check access to your account : First, you should try logging into Facebook as usual. If this is not possible, for example because the password has been changed, go to the next step.
  2. reset Password:
    • Go to the Facebook login page and click “Forgot your password?”
    • Enter the email address or phone number you normally use to log in to Facebook.
    • Choose a password recovery method: either via email or SMS. You will receive a code.
    • Enter this code on the Facebook page and reset your password.
  3. Account recovery process:
    • If the above method doesn't work or if you have lost access to the email address or phone number associated with your account, go to: facebook.com/hacked
    • Follow the on-screen instructions to start the recovery process.
  4. Review your account activity:
    • Once you regain access to your account, review activity. Pay particular attention to postings, messages or other activities that you did not initiate yourself.
    • Delete unwanted posts or changes.
  5. Increase security:
    • Enable two-factor authentication. This adds an extra layer of security as you have to enter a code that is sent to your phone every time you log in.
    • Review and clean the list of devices that have access to your account.
    • Change passwords from other accounts (email, bank, etc.) if you have used the same password in multiple places.
  6. Let friends know:
    • Let your Facebook friends know that your account has been hacked so that they don't click on suspicious links or share information with the scammer.
