As part of an investigation into the MS-13 gang, the FBI wants to listen in on a suspect's conversations on the messenger app.
As ORF reports, the FBI wants to force Facebook to decrypt Messenger.
According to insiders, the FBI wants to break the encryption of text and audio connections on the messenger app in order to listen in on a suspect's conversations as part of an investigation against the MS-13 gang.
Citing three people familiar with the case, Reuters news agency reported that the proceedings are ongoing behind closed doors in a federal court in California.
However, neither the US company nor the Washington Department of Justice commented on the information.
If the verdict goes in favor of the FBI, according to some reports, action could also be taken against similar services such as WhatsApp.
The MS-13 gang is active in the United States and parts of Central America. According to ORF, President Donald Trump is said to have cited the group's work as an example of the consequences of a lax immigration policy and described its members as "animals".
